The Jodel Club UK - A Very Brief History

Formed in a very windy hangar at Bagby in North Yorkshire in September 1979 by Peter Underhill, an avid Jodel owner and enthusiast, it was initially known as the UK Jodel Club. This expanded with members from Australia, including Frank Rogers who’s translated Jodel drawings promoted a large upsurge of Jodel building in the country.

Jodel pilots Chris and Mavis Parker took on the running of the club some years later and published regular newsletters, over many years. The club adopted the slogan ‘Bent Wings are Best’. The club however went on hiatus for about 15 years and relied on the large number of enthusiasts who had set up and joined the ‘International Jodel Club’ (a yahoo group). This attracted a lot of Jodel builders, inspectors and maintainers including Ernie Horsfall who at the age of 100 is still a regular contributor (and inspector!). There are thousands of members of the International Jodel Club Yahoo Group, from all over the globe and it has proven to be a great way of sharing technical knowledge.

Hans Teijgeler produced a fantastic website jodel.com, in recent years this became unsupported however the archive has been saved at www.jodel-passion.org by Jodel member Pako Martagón

Technology moves on and a Facebook group ‘Jodel Flyers Group’ was formed by Harry Haigh, a long time Jodel club member and himself a builder and flyer. The group allowed more sharing of photographs and flying events. Membership has grown quickly and now includes members from outside the UK.

To unify all the various English speaking Jodel forums, a website was put together by Jan Atherton with the help of Stuart MacConnacher and relaunched for the Jodel Club UK, with the intention of bringing together the various sections of Jodellers; Builders, Flyers and Enthusiasts. This now has a permanent home at www.jodelclub.co.uk

The club operates with no fees, no committee, just cooperation and coordination of enthusiastic owners, builders and flyers. The club is still evolving and growing after its break of operation, we want to know what you want from us, so let us know – drop us a message on jodelclubuk@gmail.com or catch us at the annual LAA Rally.
